A Note from the Wardens

Over the past few months, there have been conversations between Buddy, Bishop Wright, and Canon Alicia, and most recently with Canon Alicia, Ben, and me to discuss Buddy’s ministry at Saint Anne’s. In addition, the Vestry met on Sunday, August 21 to discuss this as well.

The original timeline for Buddy serving as Interim Rector in an extended capacity involved starting the CAT Survey in the Spring of 2023 and culminating with a search process to begin late 2023 / early 2024. Normally, an Interim Rector’s ministry is 12-18 months before the call of a Rector, but we were fortunate that Bishop Wright agreed to an extended period with Buddy as the Interim.

In our opinion, Buddy has had an overwhelmingly positive influence on our parish. Much has been accomplished in the short time Buddy has been with us, and we continue to work on initiatives for 2022 and beyond. As we approach two years with Buddy’s ministry at the end of November, the Vestry and the Diocese have been discerning, ‘where is Saint Anne’s now’, ‘where do we want to go from here’, ‘how do we continue the good work we have started’, and ’what our plans are as we move into the future’.

This is leading the Vestry into a discernment process with a representative from the Diocese, Sally Ulrey, who is the Missioner for Congregational Vitality. Sally will assist the Vestry through a Mutual Ministry Review (MMR). This is not a survey, but rather a process to determine what is the best path forward to ensure the continued health and stability of Saint Anne’s. With Sally’s guidance, Buddy and the Vestry will set, plan, and implement goals for Buddy’s continued ministry at Saint Anne’s. As a parish, we will celebrate our achievements and name the challenges we face. As part of the Mutual Ministry Review, there will be an annual review to evaluate what we have accomplished and make certain we are still on the correct path and meeting those goals. You will also be involved in this process. In January 2023, a CAT Survey (Congregational Assessment Tool) will be provided for your input. This tool will be about measuring the level of energy at Saint Anne’s, pinpointing our strengths, working on the future together, and uncovering potential resources we may not know.

As part of the Mutual Ministry Review, Buddy’s title will change from Interim Rector to Priest-In-Charge. The authority of the two titles is the same, but one difference is that Priest-In-Charge is a priest well-known and is already employed by the parish, whereas an interim rector is a priest trained in interim ministry and selected by the Vestry and approved by the bishop.

Ben and I, with the Vestry want you to hear this from us. We do not have all the answers at this time, as this process is new to us, but if you have questions, please ask and we will get answers for you.

What we do ask for are your prayers as we discern and move into this next step in the discernment process with Buddy. This may be new for many of us, but we are excited and hopeful for the future.

‘When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.’ – Isaiah 43:2

God bless us all as we discern the future of St. Anne’s.
