“I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me.” John 10:14
Iconography - the painting or "writing" of icons - is a living tradition and perhaps the oldest form of Christian sacred art. It has been an integral part of the worship and mystical life of Christians since apostolic times. Tradition holds that St. Luke was the first iconographer. The artistic and spiritual language of icons developed over centuries and is carefully preserved through the tradition of recreating sacred images. We will use both traditional and modern materials, techniques, and practices to create a sacred icon of the Good Shepherd.
Kara Gillette was introduced to iconography in 2015 through a workshop led by Teresa Harrison. Over the next 5 years Kara studied extensively with Teresa, quickly taking on the role of assistant, co-teacher, and eventually becoming an instructor and retreat leader on her own. Kara has also studied with several other instructors in both acrylic and egg tempera mediums. Kara has taught at Kanuga and at churches and retreat centers around the country as well as online. A native of Portland, Oregon, Kara holds a B.A. in Art History and Psychology from Portland State University. She now lives in Boise, Idaho with her husband Christian and their two Siamese cats.
